Orthodontics Questions Answered

Tooth

Below are answers to the questions we hear frequently from our Tarrytown orthodontics patients. If you have a question that isn’t answered here, feel free to call or text us at (914) 332-0900.

Do I need a referral from my general dentist?

A: A referral isn’t necessary. While we always appreciate and welcome referrals from dentists, you can make an appointment without one. Simply request an appointment online or call or text us at (914) 332-0900. Keep in mind, during orthodontic treatment, you should continue to see your regular dentist for checkups and cleanings. For your family’s convenience, we offer pediatric dental care at 914 Smiles in addition to orthodontics.

Is it okay to start orthodontic treatment if a child still has primary teeth?

A: Yes, it is. Sometimes, it’s actually preferable to start treatment when your kiddo still has baby teeth. Not always, but in certain cases, early treatment can prevent or intercept more serious problems from occurring and help kids avoid extractions or surgery later in life. This is why the American Association of Orthodontists recommends kids see an orthodontist by the age of seven.

Will I need to have teeth pulled before I can start braces or clear aligner treatment?

A: Every patient is unique and it depends on your case. However, we use the latest technology and treatments, which usually allows us to avoid extracting teeth.

What happens if I put off orthodontic treatment?

A: Unfortunately, your teeth and jaw won’t straighten out over time as you get older. In fact, malocclusion (or a bad bite) will get worse with age. Even though we can achieve outstanding results with our adult patients, there is a benefit to seeking treatment as a child or teenager when the jaw and face are still growing. In extreme cases, putting off treatment will mean needing extractions or jaw surgery to get dramatic results.

Why should I visit an orthodontist?

A: An orthodontist like Dr. Kothari goes to dental school and then completes two to three more years of specialty training in an orthodontic residency program. He’s a specialist in the alignment, positioning and spacing of the teeth and jaws. Since orthodontic treatment can cause permanent changes in your facial structure and smile, it’s very important to see a certified specialist in orthodontics to receive care. Dr. Kothari has the knowledge and experience to safely give you outstanding results that improve the function and appearance of your smile.

What’s the best age to visit an orthodontist?

A: The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have an orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. Often times, they won’t need treatment and Dr. Kothari will monitor their growth and development until the time is right to kick-off the teeth-straightening process. If he does spot certain red flags, addressing them while a child is still growing can prevent the need for more complicated, lengthy, expensive treatment later in life.

What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment?

A: Straightening your teeth and aligning your bite can improve your appearance, oral health and overall health. Here are some advantages of orthodontic treatment:

  • Straight teeth are easier to clean, reducing your risk of gum disease and tooth decay
  • When teeth are in their proper places, it prevents or reduces erosion and uneven wear of the enamel
  • When your jaw is aligned, it can help prevent TMJ pain, headaches, migraines and teeth grinding
  • Straight teeth and an aligned jaw help improve your ability to chew and speak
  • Orthodontic treatment can help prevent or decrease bone loss
  • By creating facial symmetry, it can improve your appearance
  • You’ll get a big increase in confidence and self-esteem when you love your smile!

What happens at my first visit?

A: At your first appointment at our Tarrytown orthodontic office, you’ll tour the practice and receive complimentary digital x-rays. Dr. Kothari will examine your mouth, take a look at your diagnostic records and then let you know if treatment is necessary. He’ll walk you through his findings and your treatment options, as well as answer any questions you may have. We’ll also go over everything you need to know, including the cost of orthodontic treatment, what to expect and insurance. This first consultation is complimentary.
